Bishop’s University

Bishop’s University is an undergraduate university founded in 1843 as Bishop’s College. Its main goal is to provide students with quality education in the fields of fine arts, humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, business and education. Bishop’s University is located in the bilingual community of Lennoxville, a suburb of Sherbrooke, Quebec.

Bishop’s University’s 550-acre campus offers breathtaking views and an atmosphere of rare charm and beauty. It comprises 25 buildings, including seven residences, two libraries, two theatres, exceptional classrooms, laboratories, a sports and recreation centre that includes three gymnasiums and an 800-seat arena, a historic chapel, a music recital room, and a daycare centre. The campus is also home to a duck pond and wildlife refuge, ten tennis courts, indoor and outdoor pools, cross-country ski trails, and the oldest nine-hole golf course in Canada.

Bishop’s University is now seeking an Accountant to fill a temporary full-time position in the Financial Services team.

Your role at Bishop’s University

Under the leadership of the Manager of Financial Services, the incumbent will be responsible for the accounting cycle of all funds of the University for the internal and external financial statements. The accountant is also responsible for all government reporting including reports required by the various research agencies. More precisely, you will:

  • Participate in the year-end activities for the preparation of the external financial statements including the audit for the three funds (operating fund, restricted fund and capital fund);
  • Prepare journal entries, account analyses and reconciliations with required supporting evidence both for the regular accounting cycle and for fiscal year-end purposes, for the three funds;
  • Be responsible for the financial reporting of the capital projects and the restricted funds;
  • Review current accounting processes, make recommendations and implement changes to streamline operations;
  • Assist in the preparation of the annual budget;
  • Be responsible for the preparation of financial reports for governments including reports for research agencies;
  • Coordinate the work of students working in the Financial Services Department;
  • Work with other departments to ensure that all government reporting is consistent and accurate with the University’s records, and provide support where required;
  • Assist in the implementation of internal controls, support the Manager of Financial Services in special projects including the evolution of the financial system;
  • Perform various administrative and financial tasks for the Bishop’s University Foundation, including the preparation of the financial statements.

Your profile

Education and experience:

  • University degree in Business / Commerce with accounting specialization;
  • Accounting designation would be an asset;
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in general accounting and the preparation of financial statements;

Expertise: 

  • Capacity to adapt to changes in work environments;
  • Must be bilingual (English and French) written and spoken;
  • Very good knowledge of computerized General Ledger systems and Microsoft Excel;
  • Very good knowledge of external audit processes;
  • Excellent ability to work in a team;
  • Autonomy and an excellent spirit of analysis and synthesis;
  • Communication skills and popularize information;
  • Have a sense of organization, be methodical and demonstrate high professional rigor as well as an excellent sense of integrity;
  • Be oriented towards efficiency, results and respect of established deadlines.
